Yui left early in the morning for the inn for breakfast while waiting for the ninja headquarter to assign the suitable ninja for her mission. She needed a high-level ninja to accompany her to the Bewildered Forest in the Land of Forest. Touwa had mentioned he would love to join her for the journey, but as a genin, his travel was restricted. He couldn't leave the village without a senior shinobi, according to the rules which Yui wasn’t really familiar with. Regardless, she on the other hand wasn’t restricted by the rules since she was a civilian, not a ninja.

Also… since the headquarter was the one who assigned the mission, Touwa's intention and plan wouldn’t matter. While Yui was wondering who would be picked for her mission, a sudden voice from the back broke her thoughts.

"Morning!" The server on the counter greeted her. "Morning~ One cup of hot green tea, please." Yui responded with a tiring greeting, but her voice rang out clearly in the otherwise quiet tavern. The sun had yet to rise, explaining why Yui was the first and only customer at the moment.

The server, Rin, who was also a friend of Yui's, replied warmly. She was about the same age as Yui, had beautiful long dark brown hair and a pair of blue eyes. After a minute or so, she brought Yui's green tea, white steam swirling from the beverage into the air.

"Here you go! So how is your mission?" A hot green tea still steaming white was handed over to her table. "Still waiting for someone to be assigned to the mission. I will ask my little cousin for the status, since he is a shinobi and should have the most updated information." With still time to spare and no other customers around, the two friends sat together, chatting to pass the time.

As the sun began to rise, casting a soft glow over the village, Hiroshi arrived at the inn. Dressed in the standard Takigakure Uniform with a backpack on his back. His steps were deliberate, and his expression, as always, was serious. Entering the inn, he immediately noticed Yui sitting with her friend, Rin, sipping her tea. He approached their table, his presence almost unnoticed until he spoke. "Yui-san,” he said in a low, measured tone, "I’ve been assigned to your mission.” He glanced at her, a hint of skepticism in his eyes, a subtle reminder of the Tokonatsu hierarchy. He stood tall, his demeanor exuding authority and experience.

Just then, the door of the inn swung open again, and Touwa walked in, his posture confident yet casual with Kuro right next to him. Geared and ready for the mission. Spotting Yui and Hiroshi, he made his way over. "Good morning,” he greeted, a slight smirk playing on his lips. Touwa’s tone held a hint of sarcasm, his elitist attitude subtly showing. He acknowledged Hiroshi with a respectful nod before turning to Yui. "Yui-nee,” he called his voice light but with an underlying condescension. "Are you ready for this mission?”

Hiroshi cut in, his tone authoritative. "We should head out immediately. Mori no Kuni is not close, and we need to make the most of the daylight. Follow me.” Without waiting for a response, Hiroshi turned and started towards the cave system that served as an exit from Takigakure. Touwa followed suit, casting a brief glance back at Yui, his expression unreadable.

As they walked through the village, the early morning air was cool and refreshing. Hiroshi led the way, his pace steady and unwavering. Despite his lack of social skills, his competence in his role was undeniable. Touwa walked beside him, occasionally making light conversation, though his tone remained distant.

Reaching the entrance to the cave system, the group was greeted by a few guards. Passing the checkpoint with no problems. Hiroshi stopped and turned to face Yui and Touwa. "Stay close and be careful,” he instructed. With that, they entered the cave system, the darkness enveloping them as they moved deeper. The sound of their footsteps echoed off the walls, creating an eerie ambiance.

It didn't take too long for the group to reach the guard stationed at the exit and once again passing the checkpoint with no problem, they were met with the jungles of Bonchi no Kuni.

"Hi, and morning." Yui responded to Hiroshi's greeting with the simplest of words. As a rebellious Tokonatsu in the lowest "caste”, Yui barely mastered any noble etiquette. She also never tried to, as for her, being mannerful was sufficient regardless of gracefulness. Last but not least, both of them knew each other as they came from the same clan, so there was little need for formality.

They weren't particularly close though, due to both of them being reserved in nature, and the age gap played a factor too. If her memory served her correctly, Yui was once shuffled under Hiroshi's class. She received adequate care, but it was probably the most boring period of her life due to his deadpan personality.

"He is handsome though." Rin muttered to Yui, to which she responded in the same tone, "True, I won't deny that."

Shortly afterward, her little cousin walked into the inn with his usual elitist attitude. Yui sighed; she still couldn't bring herself to like that side of him, but as usual, she let it slide. Maybe he will grow up one day and change the habit, she thought to herself. "Seems like I have to go now. Bye~" She bid her friend goodbye before leaving the inn with the newly formed group.

The pace of the journey was steady but gradually slowing down. It might not have been noticeable to many, but the always-serious Hiroshi sensed something amiss and suddenly turned back. "You are slowing us down."

Yui, with an annoyed face, simply responded with a shrug. She didn't say a word, but her expression clearly conveyed her thoughts: "What do you expect? I can't help it. I'm just a civilian. This equipment is too much. I need help, dummy."

In case Hiroshi didn't catch on, Yui pointed at her luggage, then gestured between herself and Touwa. The luggage was almost the same size as Touwa and equally heavy. Apart from her essential belongings —which were four times more than your average tourist and definitely not the main reason for the weight— the luggage also contained all the tools necessary for her job.

"So you need help?" The eldest Tokonatsu asked.

"Yes." Although Touwa was a proven Genin, he was still a child. Hence she could only rely on their eldest adult cousin.

The jungle was lush and thick with vegetation, its canopy allowing only specks of sunlight to reach the ground. The air was filled with the sounds of wildlife and the rustling of leaves which was both soothing and alerting.

As they traveled deeper into the jungle, the sun began its descent, casting long shadows and signaling the approach of evening. Hiroshi decided it was time to set up camp for the night. He found a small clearing surrounded by trees, which provided a degree of shelter and concealment.

"We'll set up camp here," Hiroshi announced, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Yui, you can start preparing our dinner. Touwa, gather some firewood."

Not wasting time Touwa set off to find firewood, his movements quick and efficient. Hiroshi, meanwhile, started setting up the tents, his actions precise and methodical. The evening air grew cooler as the sun finally dipped below the horizon, and the sky shifted to deep hues of purple and blue. Touwa returned with an armful of firewood, which he handed to Hiroshi. Together, they built a small fire, its warm glow providing light and heat as the temperature dropped.

Hiroshi subsequently assigned Yui to cooking, to which she agreed. She wasn't exactly a great cook, but it was certainly better than collecting firewood.

Drawing upon her eidetic memory, she delved into a vast mental library of recipes, randomly selecting one that matched the resources they had. "Hiroshi-san," Yui addressed him with more respect this time, "Do you know why my luggage is so heavy?"

Hiroshi didn't respond, knowing what his little cousin would say. After a few seconds of silence, Yui revealed the answer by opening the first layer of her luggage, displaying cooking and eating utensils sufficient for all three of them.

"Quality of the meal is of utmost importance during long travel." Yui declared before setting up her cooking area. Although she had some coal in her bag, she had forgotten to bring an igniter. She scrambled through her bag searching for one until Hiroshi stopped her.

She shouldn't have let Touwa's words get under her skin, and it wasn't a big deal anyway when she thought about it again. With a soft sigh, she turned her focus back to the task at hand.

"I'm sorry." she muttered, though her voice was light, almost too soft to be a proper apology. The embarrassment of being scolded kept her from speaking up more clearly. But before she could fully regain her composure, a sharp scream escaped her lips, instantly drawing everyone’s attention. Her eyes widened in shock as she pointed into the dense undergrowth.

Touwa, on the other hand, couldn’t resist a quick jab, even in a tense situation. He arched an eyebrow at Yuika, his usual smirk creeping back onto his face. "Nice one, Yui-nee. You might as well have invited it over for tea with that scream. I’m sure it’s thrilled.”

But despite his sarcasm, Touwa’s eyes were sharp, scanning the surroundings with a level of intensity that belied his casual tone. He knew how dangerous the situation could become, especially with a creature as elusive and potentially aggressive as the Grasstalker Mantis.

Hiroshi shot Touwa a stern look. "This isn’t the time for jokes, Touwa. We need to stay together and keep our wits about us. Yui-san, you’re sure you saw it? Which direction?”

Hiroshi placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch grounding her. "Don’t worry about it. Just stay close and keep your eyes peeled. We’ll approach carefully, and when we get a clear shot, we’ll capture it.”

Touwa, despite his earlier quip, adjusted his stance and prepared himself. His sarcasm was a shield, but underneath it was the steely resolve of someone who had been trained for situations just like this. "Alright, Yui-nee, no more screaming, no more mistakes.”

The group moved forward, more cautious than before, with Hiroshi leading the way and Touwa keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings. The mist swirled around them, the dense forest closing in.

Hiroshi’s voice cut through the silence once more, calm and steady. "Remember, our priority is to capture it alive. We need to study it, not kill it. Let’s do this right.”

Suddenly, a flicker of movement caught Touwa’s eye—a shadow slipping between the tall grasses ahead. Without a word, he gestured towards the spot, his gaze locking onto the target. Hiroshi nodded in acknowledgment, signaling for Yuika to stay back and ready herself.

The tension in the air was almost suffocating as they closed in on the creature’s position. The Grasstalker Mantis was nearly invisible, its grassy body blending with the surrounding vegetation. But there it was—a massive, insectoid shape lurking just ahead, its mandibles clicking softly as it surveyed the area, unaware of the group’s approach.

Hiroshi moved with precision, positioning himself for the capture. He knew they only had one shot at this. "Touwa, flank it from the left. I’ll take the right. Yui-san a keep watch of its movements.” Touwa nodded, slipping silently into position. Despite his usual sarcasm, there was no room for jokes now.

As they neared the creature, Hiroshi gave the signal. In a blur of motion, he and Touwa sprang into action. Hiroshi lunged with the net, aiming to ensnare the creature’s body, while Touwa moved in from the other side, ready to block any escape routes.

The Grasstalker Mantis reacted instantly, its instincts kicking in as it tried to evade capture. It lashed out with its powerful forelegs, narrowly missing Hiroshi as he dodged the attack. But the creature’s focus on Hiroshi gave Touwa the opening he needed. With a swift movement, Touwa struck to force the mantis into a vulnerable position.

Hiroshi’s net came down hard, entangling the creature’s limbs in a web of strong, woven fibers. Touwa moved quickly to secure the net, ensuring that the creature couldn’t break free. The Grasstalker Mantis thrashed violently, but its efforts were in vain—their combined strategy had worked.

Ultimately, it was the shinobi who prevailed when the net finally ensnared the mantis. Initially, it struggled hard to escape, but eventually, its violent thrashing began to subside. Yuika released a breath she hadn't even realised she was holding. It felt as if she herself was holding the creature down with the net.

As the adrenaline coursing through her veins began to subside, she finally spoke. "Is it… over?" Her voice was barely more than a whisper as she watched the creature's limbs struggle against the net one last time before falling still. It was a common sight for prey captured by a predator, but it felt strange to witness it in an insect. "Wait, do they even display such behaviour?" Yuika wondered to herself.

Hiroshi glanced over at her, his voice as calm as always. "For now, yes. But we need to stay vigilant until it's fully secured. Even then, don't let your guard down… as we know nothing about this foul beast."

Yuika nodded as Hiroshi and Touwa transferred the mantis into a container with a small breathing hole — not too big for it to escape, though. "Alright, it's done. Yui, I know you'd love to capture more specimens or even explore further… but NO."

Hiroshi knew her well, having once been her caretaker. Old habits die hard. "We need to move quickly before nightfall and carefully get this back to the village. Let's not waste any time."

"Okay, alright…" Yuika grumbled, though it was clear she was in high spirits. I mean, just look at her! Her eyes sparkled like shooting stars. With the creature fully restrained and the mission completed, the group began to make their way out of the forest.

Walking alongside Hiroshi and Touwa, Yuika felt a sense of accomplishment unlike anything she had experienced before. Well, not like she did much, but still, it was a "mission complete" She couldn't wait to study this strange yet fascinating creature, her mind already racing with questions, possibilities, and even the book she was going to publish… though she hadn't written even a single page yet (lol).
